Making salt dough decorations is easy way to keep your kids entertained. Made from ingredients everyone usually have at home, it’s ready in few minutes, and can provide fun for few hours.
SALT DOUGH RECIPE
- 1 cup of salt
- 1 cup of plain flour
- 0,5 cup of water
One thing to remember is that it doesn’t matter how big your cup is, as long as you are using the same one for measuring each ingredient.
Mix together flour and salt (I let my daughter do this job). Slowly stir in water, until it forms a dough. Knead it with your hands until it’s smooth. If you’d like to have a colored dough, simply add some food coloring, cocoa powder, cinnamon, or paint them with acrylic paints.
HOW TO PLAY WITH SALT DOUGH?
The easiest way is to use cookie cutters. We have a lot of those, as baking is my biggest hobby. You can make figurines and shapes. If you need to glue two pieces together, simply put a little bit of water on it. When your creations are ready, bake them in the oven in 100’C for about one hour, or until they are dry and hard. You can leave them to dry without baking, but it will take at least two days.
Children can play with it for hours. It is a great way to make decorations for Easter or Christmas. If you make a little hole in it before baking, you can then add a string and hang them, for example on your Christmas tree. Another great thing to do is to have your child leave their handprint in it. Write the date and name on it, and you will have a wonderful memento. Why not do one every year?
I also use it for some school projects. This time me and Ben made the salt dough volcano, as it’s part of his homework.
For children, fun is doubled, as when decorations made by them are dried and cooled down after baking, they can paint them!
Have fun and don’t forget to share your work!!!
